Scary and Mysterious Stock Music Pick of the Week

With Halloween right around the corner, we put together a spooky little pick of the week featuring a royalty free stock music theme by Premium Trax combined with some haunting stock footage of a mountain sunrise along with a stock photo of a pile of skulls with some fancy vintage effects. We figure all that’s left is a few horror sound effects from the Productiontrax library, and you’ve got yourself a nice piece of media to scare the neighborhood children.

Scary and Mysterious Theme features deep and dark orchestral strings, an almost-cliché bell-like synth sound, big drum hits and scary sound effects. It dark, mysterious character makes it perfect for dramatic suspense movies and videos. We combined this track with stock footage clip 372369, an otherwise harmless video of a mountain sunrise, and immediately felt something sinister brewing. We recommend pairing the track with other clips of fog and shadows to achieve a similar fee.

For the stock photo, we chose a photo that’s disturbing on its own — photo ID 325152: a pile of skulls. We affected it with some aged film effects, and it added that horror picture feel right in. The beauty of this track is in its ability to creepify even the most mundane of images. We recomend taking some shots of a city street at night and affecting it the same way. You’ll see what we mean.

Royalty Free Music Pick of the Week – The Next Big Thing

This week’s royalty free music pick of the week is a stellar production music track by Michael Musco called The Next Big Thing. Featuring a light, bouncy, percussive riff and simple piano, the track adds a hip beat and begins to soar. This track is one minute in length, making it perfect for advertising, themes, and promotional videos, particularly in tech and healthcare. Trust us, it’s very 2.0.

We’ve paired this stock music track with three corporate themed stock footage clips to give you a better sense of how this track might be used in a business project. Check out the video below, and license the track and the footage for your next production.

Six Great Uses for Stock Footage

Most people know that using royalty free music can save them a lot of time and money in production. Similarly, stock footage is a great time saver, allowing producers of multimedia content to deliver their final projects on budget and on time, without sacrificing creativity and visual diversity. Here are a few ways you can use stock footage to your advantage:

1) Background projection at concerts and live events. Music and visual stimulation go hand in hand, and stock footage creates awesome background animations for large-scale projection needs. Whether it’s a small club or giant rock venue, your graphics team can enhance any production with the use of royalty free video. Think timelapse clouds, bustling urban scenes, or psychadelic sequences to accompany your next performance or speech. Stock footage allows you to create amazing live performances with moving images at a fraction of the cost of hiring out a full production crew.

Set a futuristic sci-fi scene with a single, low cost stock footage clip.

2) Establishing location. For films and television shows requiring shots that set location, stock footage clips can go a long way in helping you to tell the where of your story. For example, inserting a stock video clip of a city highrise just before a scene can help your audience visualize that the scene takes place in a downtown office. Stock footage allows for a lot of creativity along these lines, easily affording aerial shots of cities, mountain ranges, and futuristic planetary locations. The only limit to where your next film can take place is your imagination.

3) Montages. Timelapse stock footage comes in really handy for creating montages and similar visual sequences. The fact that the video has already been edited together for you is also a huge timesaver. We like to combine montages with some royalty free music for really effective promo videos with inspiring messages.

4) Source footage for props. With a little bit of graphic artistry, you can take any clip and put it on a TV screen, computer screen, or anything else you can imagine. When a prop requires moving images, you can get a lot of utility out of simple stock footage clips.

5) Video to accompany podcasts. When you’re producing a daily or weekly audio podcast, you don’t always have time to find great images to accompany your audio. You can easily take an audio-only podcast to the realm of video podcasting with some stock footage clips. With some simple video editing software, you can mix your podcast audio with clips covering just about any topic.

News broadcasts. Have a breaking story to cover? We all know that being first with a story is everything in the news industry, and stock footage clips allow you to break the news visually faster than any other method of production, short of standing on the scene live. Inserting cool animations, historical shots, and other royalty free clips can help provide visual variety to your watchers with minimal investment of time and money.

How are you using stock footage?

Sell Stock Music and Sound Effects on Your Own Site

Now you can turn any webpage into your own personal royalty free stock media store, complete with production music, sound effects and audio, stock footage, and stock photos, thanks to our brand new remote store widgets. While setting up your own remote store widget it super simple, we’ve put together a short tutorial of how to get up and running in a matter of minutes.

admin menuStep 1: Log in to your Productiontrax contributor account, and click on the “Remote Store Widget” link in the main menu bar on the left side of the page. Don’t have an account? Create one — it’s simple and it’s free. From there, click the link to create a new widget, or select one from your widget list if you already have one set up.

Step 2: Once you’re in the widget editor, add a catchy title and tag line using the editor options on the right hand side, and select the contributor logo image you want to use on your widget. As soon as you make changes, your changes will save, and the widget will update automatically.

search filtersWe’ve added some display filters to the widgets that make them uber-useful for any contributor. First, you’ll notice a menu that allows you to either show media from just your account or show media from all of Productiontrax. The former will come in useful for those wanting to sell just their own stock audio files, while the latter option is great for leveraging the entire Productiontrax royalty free library, essentially creating a complete copy of the library on your site. You’ll also notice that you can specify which kinds of media to display in your widget – either royalty free music, sound effects, stock photos, or stock footage. You can select one, all, none, or any combination in between.

When designing your widget, remember that you can create as many widgets as you like, and put them on as many websites as you like. So, you might want to create a separate widget for your stock music and sound effects (or one for each), one for your stock footage, and a separate one for your stock photos. Figure out if multiple stores works best for your media, and if so, set your filters accordingly.

darkhive skinStep 3: Select your colors and theme out your widget to match your website. In most cases, you’ll need to use our color pickers or you’ll have to know the hex color codes to match your website’s look. Our editor allows for both, and we have some pre-styled buttons to match. Here’s where you can take a little shortcut, and use one of our pre-set themes (check out the dark hive theme at right). Using these themes are what we like to call inline style overrides — so any changes you make to your widget’s colors will be changed at launch time when a visitor happens on your your site. To use a style override, just scroll to the bottom of the editor, and pick the style you like.

checkoutStep 4: Get your code and paste it in to your website’s HTML. We provide the code you need to display your widget on your website seamlessly. And it’s a single line of simple HTML. Simply copy and paste from the code box at the top of the editor (or from the selected inline style override panel at the bottom, if you’re using one of those. Then launch your website, and bask in the glory that is your remote store widget.

Some features to note:

All credit card processing AND file downloading is done via SSL right in the widget. Your visitor never leave your site for any part of a transaction. The widget is a fully-featured track preview, shopping cart, checkout and download tool. We recommend strongly that you use HTTPS on your site, and an HTTPS connection is required in the widget’s src attribute.
• The widget is stretchy horizonatlly. It will expand to fill the space if you change the widget’s width attribute in the HTML code. The widget will not change height at this time.
• As of this writing, video playback may not work on all browsers due to a browser security restriction. We’re working on this, but the widget plays video on most browsers to a barebones extent.

Video Encoding and Conversion Software for Stock Footage Clips

When you download a stock footage clip from Productiontrax (or any other content provider, for that matter), sometimes you have to do a little work with the video file to get it to fit into your project just right, or to even be imported properly into your video editing software. Whether you’re a seasoned pro looking for some more options to add to your arsenal, or you new to video editing and are looking for a good tool for encoding and converting your stock footage clips, we’ve compiled a list of some of the most poular video conversion software out there with a few notes.

Productiontrax accepts and delivers all stock footage in Quicktime (.mov) format, which tends to be universally importable these days in video editing software. There may be times, however, when you want the clip in .mp4 or .avi for different software and computer systems, so that’s when conversion comes in really handy. You may also need to adjust compression rates, frame rates, bit rates, or some-other-technical-specificatiton-rates to fit your project, maybe for broadcast, or web streaming purposes. Whatever the application, this list should cover your needs.

video software MPEGMPEG Video Wizard DVD (Windows)
Also known as MVW-DVD, this is video editing software that allows users to create DVDs with menus. You can export video files to MPEG-4, as well as shrink DVD files to fit on other media (useful if your client only has a CD player?), and transcode between certain formats, and saving of DVD disk images. Very handy PC tool when you’re in need of something that just does the job and is reasonably reliable.

Compressor (Mac OSX)
A personal favorite of mine, and I use it whenever I’ve finished editing a clip or video and need a polished delivery file. Compressor allows exporting of source video to a wide array of preset and custom formats, including several nice presets for high-quality video compression for Web and streaming on mobile devices, like the iPhone. Easy to drag and drop stock footage clips here, and works seamlessly in the Final Cut Pro workflow.

ProCoder 3 (Windows)
ProCoder 3 is a transcoding and encoding software that allows conversion between NTSC and PAL, exporting in a variety of useful video formats, and supports multipass vbr encoding, conversion of video to all popular formats, including MPEG-1, MPEG-2, Windows Media, QuickTime, and more. Also includes some handy presets for delivering media and authoring for Blue-Ray, which should make all you super-HD audio-video-philes very happy.

Quicktime Pro (Mac OSX and Windows)
The defacto standard for video playback, encoding, and conversion, for a fairly affordable price tag. The universal quicktime player is well known, but Apple’s quicktime Pro adds advanced editing and conversion features, supporting a wide variety of popular formats. PC users will find adding the free Quicktime for Windows uber usefull in using and viewing video online, as well as for downloading and using stock footage clips.

Other great software tools for encoding and transcoding:

Roxio Creator (Windows)
Sorenson Squeeze
Telestream Episode (Mac OSX and Windows)
Cinema Craft Encoder (Windows)
ffMPEG (Linux, Mac, Widnows)

Hexagon Metrology Uses Production Music for Industrial Video

Hexagon Metrology, the leading innovator and manufacturer of worldwide dimensional measuring equipment and software, produced an in-house video to introduce a new industrial product, the ROMER INFINITE 2.0. In the past, Hexagon used production music from Productiontrax.com for internal training videos as well as for customer use.

William Fetter, Director of Marketing and Communications, says, “We love tools like productiontrax.com, where we can get access to high quality media instantly, so we can complete our projects faster than ever before.” The video shows the enhanced usability and performance of the latest version over its predecessor. The portable CMMs are used to inspect stationary parts that are either impractical or impossible mobility in over 100 different industries the major segments being automotive, aerospace, defense and heavy machinery.

The in-house video for ROMER took less than 2 weeks to complete. Hexagon Metrology used Pinnacle Studio for the production of the video, Swishmax for the animations, and Swishvideo to covert the video to a standalone projector for the web. They combined some of their own original digital footage with digital still photos, flash animation, stock photo and video. To help promote their product they turned to YouTube which made the video easily accessible to the public.

“We were looking for something that was corporate feeling, yet unobtrusive—we had a complete narrative soundtrack, so the music had to support, but not intrude,“ says William Fetter. “We were looking for a modern soundtrack without being too edgy or aggressive. After listening to a lot of different tracks on Productiontrax.com, we found just what we were looking for. We love tools like productiontrax.com, where we can get access to high quality media instantly, so we can complete our projects faster than ever before.”

Stock Footage: We Got That B-Roll!

This video was introduced to me at SXSW this year. It’s not a viral ad by a stock media company (which would have been uber-clever), but rather a sketch by a sketch-comedy troupe. I thought it was hilarious — pretty much sums up the stock footage marketplace.

I should note however, that most of the footage, just because it is stock footage, isn’t just cheap B-Roll. Productiontrax (and several other sites as well) has a large library of incredibly usefull, high-quality, thoughtful, and well produced footage. The video clips range from high-tech animations that would fit into any sci-fi film to useful charts and graphs, to yes, B-roll footage of sad guy leaning against a wall.

I think stock media serves a useful purpose in media production. All joking aside, stock footage increases our productivity and frees us up to be even more creative, if you can follow that — the footage by itself is overused and mundane, but it keeps getting used in new, and innovative ways. Don’t let the B-roll label throw you, or keep you from being innovative in how you use stock footage — just remember it’s a tool in your editor’s bag of tricks to help you get your job done, and tell the story in new and interesting ways.

Oh, here’s the video (the owners didn’t want it embedded) — http://youtu.be/SItFvB0Upb8

Productiontrax.com Celebrates 300,000th Royalty Free Production Music Upload

Phoenix, Ariz. (PRLeap) April 13, 2012 — Productiontrax.com (www.productiontrax.com), a leading provider of royalty free music, sound effects, stock footage and stock photos, today announced their 300,000th file upload. The milestone marks a doubling in size of the Productiontrax.com library since 2011.

Most of Productiontrax.com’s stock media comes from its user base of several thousand contributors like JH Kim, who added the 300,000th royalty free file this month. Kim’s contribution was a royalty free music track entitled Simple Pleasures Piano Loop 2, which sells for $12.95 for a commercial license.
“We’ve added several large libraries to our database over the past year, and continue to add content on a daily basis” says Productiontrax.com founder and CEO David Negron. “But our recent growth has been thanks to the work of our many individual contributors, who continue to show their creativity and talent, constantly adding fresh new content to Productiontrax.”

To account for the continued growth, Productiontrax.com is planning to roll out several new site features and an updated user interface later this month. “Having hundreds of thousands of files (as opposed to just thousands) requires changes in the way we present our library to the world,” Negron says. “We’ve put a lot of work into strengthening our platform from the ground up, and are working on a fresh new release that we think our customers and contributors will all appreciate.” Visitors to Productiontrax.com can expect to see changes early second quarter 2012.
